With so many places to chose from, picking the right sun destination for you can sometimes be pretty challenging. Is price more important or gay friendliness? Nightlife or quiet, relaxing beaches?
There's no gay beach but the 24km of uninterrupted sand gives you plenty of options to choose from. The beaches at the western end are particularly nice.
Nighlife
Nightlife is limited to what you can get at the resort.
Best For
Those looking for a quiet holiday on excellent beaches with access to diving or snorkelling.
Tips
>
Cayo Largo is a destination to watch if you're keeping an eye out for a deal.
>
Unlike other resort areas in Cuba, accessing very good diving and snorkelling is relatively easy here.
>
Many feel that Cayo Largo has the best beach in the Caribbean.
Recommended ReSorts & Hotels
>
Sol Cayo Largo: Probably the best resort on the island on a great stretch of beach.
No gay beach. The beaches around Trinidad are nice but many other Cuban destinations have nicer beaches.
Nighlife
Limited to what's available on the resort. There is some (straight) nightlife in Trinidad.
Best For
Those looking for good value in a destination that has distinctive cultural and historical interest.
Tips
>
Although you fly into the city of Cienfuegos, most resorts are on the southern coast near the town of Trinidad. Expect to travel an hour or more from the airport to your hotel.
>
The town of Trinidad is a World Heritage Site and is one of the best preserved examples of a colonial town anywere in the Americas. Make a point of taking a day to explore it.
>
Most of the hotel options here are older, rather uninspiring choices. They are relatively cheap, but don't expect too much - even from the 4 star rated hotels.
Recommended ReSorts & Hotels
>
Brisas Trinidad del Mar: Probably the best available choice in the area. Like many other Cuban resorts, the food here is rather ordinary.
The beaches here are small and unimpressive, tucked in along the rocky coast.
Nighlife
There is one gay bar (sort of). There is nightlife in Playa del Carmen and Cancun - but getting back to Cozumel at the end of the evening isn't practical.
Best For
Those looking for excellent diving and snorkelling.
Tips
>
Playa del Carmen (and much better beaches) are only a 40 minute ferry away, so it's easy to pop over to the mainland for the day.
>
The water on the western coast are the calmest and the sunsets are beautiful.
>
Cozumel is a popular cruise ship stop so the town can be overrun when a ship is in port.
Recommended ReSorts & Hotels
>
El Cozumeleno Beach Resort: An excellent value choice - look for the prices from Signature.
>
Occidental Grand Cozumel: The best of the resorts available through the tour companies.
