Viennese coffee culture and the relaxed, kicked-
back atmosphere (in German called "Gemütlichkeit") are legendary. You have to indulge
and enjoy. The gay and lesbian cafés and bars
combine Viennese charm with queer lifestyle.
Cafe Berg opera Close to the university, you can find one of the
brightest stars in the (coffee) skies over Vienna:
the chic café-restaurant Berg and the adjacent gay book store Löwenherz (Lionheart). Giant windows, comfortable seating and an excellent
kitchenmake Café Berg also attractive for students. We can recommend the Sunday brunch. It
opens early at 10 am and is the first gay and lesbian daytime café in Vienna
Cafe´Savoy This traditional Viennese coffeehouse dates back
to the imperial era - quite obvious in the plush
furnishings and stucco. On Saturdays, when an
eclectic flea market takes place on the adjacent
Naschmarkt, the Savoy also opens in the morning.
The cafés Stein(9., Währinger Str. 6-8), Diglas
(1., Wollzeile 10), Museum(1., Friedrichstr. 6) and
Sperl(6., Gumpendorfer Str. 11) are also worth a
visit - not just because they count many gays
and lesbians among their patrons.
